Innovative concept Submission Guidelines

This section includes criteria for each category of concept notes for students, and instructions for how to submit proposed concept notes.

Criteria by concept note Category 

  1. Individual concept notes:These are submitted by an individual students studying in 5th -8th Semesters in AICTE approved engineering colleges and technical institutes.
  2. Group concept notes: These are submitted by a group of students studying in 5th -8th Semesters in AICTE approved engineering colleges and technical institutes.
  3. Concepts notes should be prepared with ideas appropriate to India taking the global knowledge that exists in the area of universal design and accessibility for persons with disabilities and other groups.   4. Word Count: 4,000 to 5,000
  5. Follow the steps below to develop a Concept Paper.
  6. What are you interested about (within the general subject matter of universal design)? List a few areas of curiosity.

For example, I am interested about these different areas:

  • Accessible bus
  • ICT for persons with low vision or cerebral palsy
  • Accessible work environment in rural areas
  • Text to speech software in Indian languages
  1. Choose one of the areas of interest and develop some specific questions (this is called “question framing”). Many research questions can be classified as:
  • Exploratory (just trying to find out about something)
  • Descriptive (trying to obtain descriptive data, such as average age, income, etc.)
  • Explanatory (trying to explain the relationship between variables, like your major in college and your future earnings)

For example, I choose to develop the issue of accessible buses in Bangalore.  Here are some questions

  • What are the existing barriers in BTS buses and bus stops?
  1. This is a descriptive question.
  • Why the BTS buses are designed with accessibility features?
  1. This is general enough to be considered exploratory.
  • Is there a lack of technology to build accessible buses and bust stops? Which are the other barriers?
  1. Accessible Foot paths/bus stops
  2. Cost to build accessible buses
  3. Attitude of drivers/public and persons with disabilities
  • These are considered explanatory questions
  1. Do any of your questions lend themselves to a concept note hypothesis?  If so,write out any hypotheses.

A concept note hypothesis is an “educated guess” about relationships that may explain behavior and phenomena.  For example write down how your concept note gives a solution the problem of inaccessible BTS buses and bus stops in Bangalore.

  1. Identify the ideal evidence (data) and how you will probably try to gather that evidence (your methodology).

You are very likely to need multiple types of evidence (data).  For my example hypotheses, I need the following:

  • 2011 Census data on Disability and gaining population
  • BTS bus passes given to persons with disabilities and senior citizens
  • Information about existing number of buses and bus stops
  1. Write a Concept Paper.

Draw on what you have developed in terms of areas of interest need; problem statement and innovations research questions, research hypotheses, data sources, and methodology.

  1. Begin with a very direct and explicit statement of your area of interest and your concept note questions. This should take about one paragraph.
  2. Move on to state your hypotheses concept note statement. This should take another paragraph or so.
  3. Conclude with a discussion of your proposed methodology with all the technical details. This should take another paragraph.

The entire Concept Paper should be 3 to 4 pages, double-spaced.  Citations are appropriate if you used any sources in developing your Concept Paper.
